Preneur Lab and Edward M. Kennedy (EMK) centre co-organised another roundtable discussion of CXO Hub on ‘Startup Investment Stories’ on January 07 evening at EMK centre premises in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The event brought together different stakeholders of the startup ecosystem. The country’s top investors, c-suit executives, industry experts and government officials shared their insights, expectations and advices for the budding entrepreneurs.
The roundtable started with introductory speeches from Arif Nezami- CEO of Preneur Lab and MK Aaref -CEO of EMK Centre. Raisul Kabir, CEO of Brain Station 23, shared his lessons from recent investment round that his company received. Russell T Ahmed, vice-president of Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services, (BASIS) said, “We need more mature products and entrepreneurs. Investment and revenue will run after startups if they can build some success cases.” One of the important topics of the roundtable was increasing the success rates of the upcoming startups. Mariam Ispahani, a serial entrepreneur from Silicon Valley, USA shared her experience of building and selling five companies in USA. In response to a question from the guests Managing Director of BD Venture Capital Ltd Shawkat Hossain said, “2017 can be an interesting year for e-commerce startups”. Hussain Elius, CEO of Pathao, a popular e-commerce firm added, “Many local giants are stepping into e-commerce in 2017. But market needs more mature efforts.”
“Government is very interested and putting significant efforts to support the startups via developing hi-tech parks, idea project and mobile gaming project. The community will see more impactful actions very soon,” said Susanta Kumar Saha, additional secretary of ICT Division of the government. CEO of Telenor Health Sajid Rahman, Managing Director of Uniqlo Social Business Bangladesh Ltd, Managing Director of Uniqlo Najmul Huq, Investment Manager of IPLE Capital Ltd Raisul Amin and Lead of Women Techmakers Bangladesh Rakhshanda Rukham also spoke in the event.
