OpenAI and PayPal have announced a partnership that will redefine how users shop and pay within ChatGPT, introducing a new era of Agentic Commerce. This alliance will allow millions of ChatGPT users to experience instant checkout using PayPal while enabling tens of millions of PayPal merchants to reach customers directly within conversational experiences.
Transitioning from chat to checkout will soon become seamless. According to Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal, “Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop. By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps.”
The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is designed to make PayPal’s wallet features, including multiple funding options, buyer protection, and post-purchase services like tracking and dispute resolution, easily accessible within ChatGPT’s ecosystem. This ensures that users not only enjoy convenience but also benefit from secure and reliable transactions.
Moreover, PayPal will integrate its delegated payments API to handle card payment processing, further streamlining the user experience. For merchants, this partnership is transformative — by 2026, PayPal will connect its ACP server to ChatGPT commerce, allowing small businesses and major retail brands in categories such as fashion, beauty, home improvement, and electronics to showcase and sell their products directly in ChatGPT without complex integrations.
Behind the scenes, PayPal will manage merchant routing, payment validation, and orchestration, ensuring smooth operations. As a result, millions of products will soon become discoverable and purchasable through ChatGPT, merging conversational AI with e-commerce innovation.
In addition to commerce, PayPal is expanding its AI strategy with OpenAI.
